Continued social distancing measures have changed the way we celebrate special occasions, but the San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines International has created another memorable way to celebrate your loved one with a song.
The San Diego Chorus was recently featured on San Diego CBS News 8 segment, The Zevely Zone, discussing how the pandemic has affected them, their rehearsal and performance schedule, and how the need to continue fundraising efforts culminated with the creation of the original Grams. "We’ve had such success with our Birthday Grams, we decided to continue producing fun Grams with innovative songs that can be sent as personalized greetings. It’s now part of our ongoing fundraising efforts, since we’ve been unable to book live performances, as we have in the past" said Andrea Chertkow, Business Development Coordinator and San Diego Chorus member. The standard, "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" is a song that The San Diego Chorus has long sung as a singing valentine. It is such a simple and touching love song. The Chorus has delivered it in person for many special occasions; marriage proposals, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, of course, and to couples of all kinds. "These Sweetheart Grams are the perfect gift for a special occasion, or to just show someone you are thinking about them during this unique time when we are physically apart. It’s a simple way to stay connected to your loved ones" Andrea concluded. The San Diego Chorus will create an acapella, Sweetheart Gram that includes a personalized message from the sender. It’s a unique, memorable, and a safe way to celebrate friends and family. For $59, customized Sweetheart Grams are created and delivered digitally via email and recipients may view their video message online or download a digital copy of their video greeting. With easy online ordering at https://sdchorus.org/singinggramorder, with a 5-day turnaround, it’s easy to celebrate a loved one with a song by sending a singing Sweetheart Gram. “Once you’ve heard the ‘ring’ of a four-part barbershop chord, you’ll never forget the experience,” says San Diego Chorus Director Kathleen Hansen, a Sweet Adelines International member for more than two decades. “A cappella singing is an art form that helps musicians develop a complex skillset that often starts with enjoying the rich sound of vocal harmony.” The San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines International celebrates a 70+ year history that includes two international championship titles and a multitude of regional competition medals. At first glance, its 80+ singers reflect a broad demographic spectrum in terms of musical background, education and age. The deep bonds within the chorus are immediately evident, and a closer look reveals many compelling reasons that membership has been growing steadily in recent years. Beyond the documented wellness benefits of choral singing, many musicians describe a cappella singing as a transformational art form and a lifelong journey. Twelve Fantastic Reasons to Sing with the San Diego Chorus 1. We are connected. Togetherness is everything for us: building friendships and sharing laughter, music, and experiences. 2. We are always changing. Development is ongoing for personal musical growth, from the technical to the artistic. 3. We get creative. Creativity is innate to our self-expression through innovative costuming, choreography, and scripts. 4. We all belong. With everyone included, belonging and diversity are respected and encouraged. 5. We love the spotlight. Performances and community outreach help us share our joy and music with all kinds of audiences. 6. We feel good. The health benefits abound, with emotional and physical outlets that help lower stress and promote overall well-being. 7. We are continuous learners. Each rehearsal or personal practice is an exploration in education; our director, chorus, and regional and international organizations provide special workshops, vocal instruction, and educational events. 8. We are going places. Adventures always await us, with annual activities, both local and with regional, national, and international travel. 9. We use “quartet” as a verb. We sing four-part a cappella harmony in the barbershop style, either individually or in a section, including opportunities to participate in quartets in regional and international competitions. 10. We span decades. Not only is our chorus 70+ years old, we enjoy and benefit from a multigenerational influence among our members. 11. We lead the way. Leadership opportunities - building confidence and skills - are available for every member, and the chorus enjoys bringing new ideas to the Sweet Adelines International organization. 12. We support each other. Generous support at all stages of membership, from our Rookie Team to Emeritus status, is key, as well as our contributions as a non-profit organization benefitting musical education for young singers. This virtual performance is a melodious, warm and uplifting musical and visual celebration spotlighting the similarities that bring all women and other marginalized genders together, as well as supporting the diversity that makes us a melting pot of power, strength, and unity. “We started to explore how important women were in our lives, and the connection we felt to all women, throughout all history,” Grammy award winner Janis Ian said. “It’s important to thank the women who went before us, blazing a trail we still walk.” This collaboration between artists from opposite sides of the globe has a timely and powerful message for all siblings in song that will always ring true: Together, we are stronger. “Everybody has a story, and it might not be a pleasant one, but we are able to build our own stories on the bones of our past,” Ian said. "Ultimately, the things that unite us are stronger than the things that separate us.” “The San Diego Chorus, like many performing arts organizations, has been heavily impacted by COVID-19. With onsite rehearsals, shows, and other fundraising efforts paused, the Chorus has focused on creative ways to keep members and audiences engaged virtually. The opportunity to be chosen to premiere this heartfelt and timely song came at an ideal time,” Master Director Kathleen Hansen says. "The San Diego Chorus is so much more than just a vocal performance organization. Our members find lifelong friendship, encouragement, and joy in what we do together. We truly are a family," says Master Director Kathleen Hansen. "The spirit and imagery inspired by the lyrics celebrates the remarkable diversity, relationships, and resiliency that shines in us, and are a powerful reminder of why we do what we do, and that this season of separation is only temporary." The video will be available at Noon, Friday, August 21, 2020, at 12 p.m. Pacific Time on the Chorus’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/sandiegochorussweetadelines/, and YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/user/SanDiegoChorus. Her song “Society’s Child”, written at the age of fourteen, went on to ignite a storm among radio broadcasters and listeners for its unflinching look at the relationship between a black boy and a white girl. In 1976, Janis won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “At Seventeen,” which has now been featured in everything from anti-bullying commercials to television shows like The Blacklist. Her tours have sold out in every country she’s visited, and her songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as John Mellencamp, Amy Grant, Diane Schuur, and Joan Baez. Janis has dueted with Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Mel Torme and, most recently, Trevor Sewell; their single, released only in the UK, jumped up the jazz charts, again reminding us of the diversity in a career that saw Ian on the cover of Downbeat at 16, featured in Melody Maker at 26, honored by the Grammy Hall of Fame twice, co-starring with Laurie Metcalf, Rita Moreno, and Alex Borstein in the final episode of Getting On, receiving Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus Reviews picks for her children’s book The Tiny Mouse. Janis continues to expand and move forward with plans for several more books and has a new album is in the works. https://www.janisian.com/ ABOUT ANGELA AKI Angela Aki is a pop singer, songwriter, and pianist. In 2005, Angela released an independent mini-album under Virgo Music entitled "One," which was the #1 selling Indies album of 2005.
