The San Diego Chorus is delighted to welcome coach Ryan Heller to their Fall 2023 Recharge event. Ryan recently assumed the role of Director of Alamo Metro Chorus in San Antonio, Texas, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International. With his trademark exuberance, Ryan is as energy-driven as the sound and performances that he inspires from each musician! A "barbershop brat," Ryan joined the Barbershop Harmony Society as a high school freshman, singing with then Evergreen District champs, Vocal Gentry. Under Ryan's past leadership, the Pride of Portland Chorus won regional championships each cycle of competitions, making six appearances on the international stage with five top ten finishes.

An Oregon native, Heller is a passionate advocate of new music, and a lover of a cappella, opera and musical theater. |
The San Diego Chorus welcomes interested women and non-binary singers to visit and participate in our open weekly rehearsals anytime, year-round. Several times a year, we host a Singer Open House, which is a special evening designed to help prospective members experience the joy of singing 4-part a cappella harmony and learn more about our vocal assessment and audition pathway.

“Once you’ve heard the ‘ring’ of a four-part barbershop chord, you’ll never forget the experience,” says San Diego Chorus Director Kathleen Hansen, a Sweet Adelines International member for more than two decades. “A cappella singing is an art form that helps musicians develop a complex skillset that often starts with enjoying the rich sound of vocal harmony.”

Creating Art Together is a Salve for Our Collective PsycheSAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE | MARCH 22, 2020
Kathleen Hansen is Choral Conductor for San Diego Chorus, San Diego Women’s Chorus and Sun Harbor Chorus As children, we sought the comforting feeling of “home”: curling up in a favorite blankie, cuddling with a pet, or giggling with a best friend. Growing up, many people found that place of safety making music in bands, orchestras and choirs. One of the reasons I became a conductor was to create an environment to provide others with that feeling, that space, that experience. Once the realities of adulthood set in, there are few and precious spaces where we can join together with vulnerability to explore and express the feelings that we may otherwise hold in or lose touch with. Creating art together is a salve for our collective psyche that gives us rest in a fast-paced world. |

Music Teacher Claims Second Home Within the Community She DirectsSAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE | AUGUST 19, 2019
Kathleen Hansen sees community as the cure to the illness of hate and violence, especially the community found in music groups. Over her 20-year history as a choral conductor and music teacher, she has witnessed the power of music in transforming lives. She has seen how it draws people together despite their differences and helps them develop compassion for others. "Music is such a gentle entry into the world of what other people are experiencing,” Hansen says. "It creates room for empathy toward another person’s story rather than fear, bias or misunderstanding." |
