Our Musical Repertoire

The San Diego Chorus performs a mix of contemporary a cappella arrangements and traditional barbershop music. As an organization committed to musical education, performance and competition, we select music from several categories:

​COMPETITION
​The Chorus generally performs a barbershop ballad and an uptune when we compete. These two songs usually change with each 2-year competition cycle, and are highly polished to showcase musical excellence, resonance and blend.
​

ENTERTAINMENT​
The Chorus has a 15-minute Entertainment Package that blends traditional and contemporary a cappella selections with one barbershop contest song. These numbers are crowd pleasers and may also be performed at shows in International competition, depending on ranking.

GENERAL
The Chorus maintains a selection of general repertoire ("rep") music that is often used in shows, small group / double quartet performances, media appearances and educational events. These tunes are often popular crowd pleasers.

HOLIDAY & SPECIAL OCCASION​
The Chorus maintains a collection of holiday and special occasion songs, typically adding a few new numbers to our repertoire yearly. These may be numbers performed jointly with other organizations or music featured at holiday and other community performances.

Member Resources

The San Diego Chorus provides a thoughtful singer toolset designed to help members build relationships, develop musical skills and deepen knowledge, with a goal to help singers learn the chorus repertoire and understand the foundational aspects of a cappella, singing, and the barbershop sound. Along the way, members also experience and benefit from the rich history of Sweet Adelines International and the San Diego Chorus.

Rookie Team
​
You came, you sang, and you want to join! Now what? Never fear - our amazing Rookie Team has a full year of events and opportunities designed to support and equip you with vocal production skills and chorus etiquette, plus fun social events!
​

Chorus Mentors
​New Members of the San Diego Chorus are paired with a personal mentor. Your mentor is a helpful “go-to” person for questions and support throughout your first year of membership. This is one more way we ensure that our singers always have a friendly face, encouragement and someone nearby to guide them.

​Section Leaders
​
Your section leader is your primary contact for musical questions. They provide weekly rehearsal notes, evaluate singer recordings and help set priorities for areas of focus in your personal practice time.

Members Only Website & App
​
The San Diego Chorus offers a Members Only Website and an app for Apple and Android Phones called Playback Genius. These tools give you access to view and print music, play part-specific and all parts learning tracks, watch choreography videos and more at home or on the go.

Music Education
Members have multiple opportunities for skill building and music education through the chorus, Golden West Region 21, and Sweet Adelines International. Learning happens both online and in-person at rehearsal, Regional and International contests, and special events such as Region 21 Summer Seminar and Stage Days, featuring a diverse range of experienced
music educators and clinicians.

Vocal Assessment & Development
​
Pitch matching, blend, and balance are vital to the sound of the San Diego Chorus, which competes at the regional and international level. New members receive a vocal assessment to determine part and placement. Private vocal instruction is available with area coaches at an additional cost.
