MUSICAL GENRE

Barbershop 101
Singing barbershop harmony is a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. Imagine performing a song with three other harmonizing singers, each hitting the perfect pitch when bam—you hear it. An overtone vibration, a resonant ring, a different sound than any one tone being sung by any one singer! These overtones provoke a visceral reaction and one of the hallmarks of barbershop music.

Although the voice parts in treble barbershop harmony have different names and functions than they do in other SATB or SSAA vocal styles, the foundation is the same—beautiful music, stunning chords and a passion to create the intangible essence of music that brings us together.

Barbershop harmonies use a cone-shaped balance of voices as we aim for a cohesive and ringing sound. Our top voices sing with less weight and intensity than lower voices.

Voice Parts in Barbershop
TENOR
Tenor is a harmony part, sung consistently above the lead. The tenor has a light, pure tone that floats above the other parts. Light lyric sopranos generally make good tenors. The range for tenor is from G above middle C to high G above the clef.

LEAD
Lead is the melody, sung with authority, clarity and consistent quality throughout the lead's range, which is A below middle C to D near the top of the staff. The lead adds color and warmth to the sound and conveys the interpretation, emotion and inflections of the song.

BARITONE
Baritone (bari) covers a similar range to lead. Baritones typically have a good ear for complex harmony, similar to alto I or soprano 2 singers. The baritone part fills out the chord to achieve the unmistakable barbershop sound.
BASS
Bass is the lowest part in the barbershop chord. Bass singers should have a rich, resonant voice to sing this foundational harmony part. The typical range is from E flat below middle C to G above middle C, similar to a contralto or alto 2 part.
