BELONGING, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Every Voice Matters

The San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines International believes that our differences make us stronger! Membership is open to singers from all ethnic and racial backgrounds, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ+ community and people of varied religions. As leaders and musicians, we are committed to growth rooted in a constant willingness to learn from others. We believe that intention and responsiveness to inclusion and diversity are essential, and help our chorus become a stronger reflection of the beautiful diversity found in our communities.

International Emphasis

The Diversity and Inclusion Task Force of Sweet Adelines International has developed a dynamic toolkit for choruses worldwide. These resources are designed to deepen our culture of inclusion and increase awareness, openness and understanding among members and leaders. As a global organization, we are committed to addressing and condemning racism, discrimination and other forms of inequity not only with words, but with meaningful actions.

"Sweet Adelines believes in a culture of belonging and is actively committed to diversity and inclusion at all levels of our organization. Our International Board of Directors established the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council to ensure ongoing stewardship, transparency, and accountability in this critical area."
JOAN BOUTILIER, PRESIDENT
International Board of Directors | Sweet Adelines International

Racial Equity Resources

Sweet Adelines International rejects any song with racist lyrics, messages or history. We openly recognize the racist roots of both Barbershop Music and organizational policies of the past. Racism and discrimination were unacceptable then and will not be tolerated now. We are actively committed to learning from our history and moving forward with urgency in the work of inclusion and equity today.  We celebrate our differences as essential to the rich harmony that unites us.

"The foundation of all that we do in the San Diego Chorus requires our organization to create and hold 'safe space' for every member. This cannot occur without an ongoing culture of inclusion and a commitment to diversity. A welcoming environment requires every member to place a high value on common ground and new learnings."
KATHLEEN HANSEN, MASTER DIRECTOR
San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines International

Local Action

The San Diego Chorus established a member-led task force focused on improving and deepening belonging, diversity and inclusion in all facets of our chorus. In addition to contributing to ongoing organizational dialogue at a regional and international level, this team develops and shares educational resources with our chorus members. These key leaders are intentional, engaged and accessible to all of our members. Feedback, questions and suggestions are encouraged.

It is amazing to be a part of an organization that not only makes sure that everyone in the room feels like they belong, but also that each person feels like they have equal access to the encouragement, support, and needed accommodations to support them on their musical journey.

I am so impressed that the San Diego Chorus has been invited to pilot the Diversity and Inclusion program for Sweet Adelines. I'm proud that our "cutting edge" reputation continues and that we are a forward thinking organization. Our training topics have expanded my thinking and reminded me of the importance of listening, learning and looking toward the future.
